TIM BORCHERS, JD
Tim Borchers founded Borchers Trust Law in 1995. He offers expertise in next-generation “Inheritance Trusts,” total probate avoidance techniques, asset protection for elders and for professionals and others concerned about potential liabilities, and retirement trust, charitable, giving and tax planning.
In 2015 Tim was awarded the distinction of Estate Planning Law Specialist (EPLS), one of only two in Massachusetts at the time.
Tim earned his law degree from Boston College School of Law in 1984; his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowdoin College was earned with summa cum laude distinction in 1980 with majors in music and economics. He is licensed to practice law in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, WealthCounsel™, the Norfolk and Plymouth Estate Planning Council, and is a board member and officer of the Massachusetts Forum of Estate Planning Attorneys, Inc. (2008-, Pres. 2012, Pres. Elect – 2016). He participates in the activities of other bar and trade organizations such as Boston Estate Planning Council, the Real Estate Bar Association of Massachusetts, and The Exit Planning Exchange. He was recognized by the Massachusetts Bar Association as one of three recipients of its Going Green Award for innovation in greening the practice of law.
He is the author of scores of articles on a wide range of estate planning topics and has developed numerous trademarked programs and resources that make the estate planning and probate processes more accessible, organized, and easily maintained.
Tim serves as a judge for the Boston College Law School Client Counseling Competition. Tim served for over 20 years as a member of the faculty for the Northeastern University Paralegal Professional Program, instructing and editing course materials as moderator of the Probate and Estate Planning section. He has been a frequent lecturer and author for the estate planning and probate courses in Massachusetts of the Business Enterprise Institute and has participate in panels of experts for Massachusetts Continuing Education. He has been a speaker for the Guardian Publishing Speakers Bureau for medical professionals and societies. In 2013, Tim began editing and teaching the Trust Basics Course for the Foundation for Continuing Education, Inc. in Massachusetts.
Tim has been an active member and leader of numerous community organizations including the Medway Economic Development Committee, and the Medfield Library Trust Fund. He serves on the Board of Directors and as counsel for Music Serving Elders, Inc.; is a soloist with the Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus, serving as President of the chorus in 2013 and 2014 and on their Board of Directors 2009-. He is an Elder in the Presbyterian Church USA.
Tim’s interests include classical singing (tenor), music composition, reading, personal fitness, and church and community service. Tim hails from New Hampshire’s Great North Woods where he learned to love hiking, camping, and scouting (he is one of five Eagle Scouts in his family). Tim and his wife, Ruth reside in Medfield, Massachusetts and have been blessed with eight beloved children, including four by adoption.
