One of the great underrated skills in both life and business is the ability to ask questions and listen to the answers. It sounds simple, and yet it’s much harder than you might think.

Almost instinctively, as human beings, we want to talk. How many times have you been involved in a conversation where while the other person was talking you were concentrating on what you were going to say next? That’s not abnormal. But it is something we all need to consciously work to overcome.

A skill many successful people develop (and I say “develop” because it does take time and practice) is using insightful questioning and engaged listening to build stronger relationships that generate better outcomes. Insightful questioning involves asking questions designed to give you a better understanding of people’s goals. Engaged listening means intentionally focusing and being fully present for the person who is talking to you.
