Teachers Training Teachers
In August 2010, inspired by speakers at the Global Leadership Summit, a number of educators from Community Covenant Church and beyond gathered to discuss the need for quality teacher training in Haitian schools. This “think tank” group diligently explored the possibility of developing professional and effective teacher training for Haitian educators. In October 2010, a team went to Haiti to gather information, interview Haitian school administrators, and observe the need for teacher training first-hand.
As a result, Teachers Training Teachers (TTT) developed a highly focused mission: to develop professional training that can help Haitian teachers to become effective and successful – training they would be unable to attain on their own.
The vision of Teachers Training Teachers is that the process and its positive impact in classrooms will become widespread and sustainable as Haitian teachers utilize the methods and in turn, eventually become instructors who provide training to their fellow countrymen.
A pilot training program is currently underway in collaboration with a partner-school in Chambrun, Haiti. A committed group of Haitian teachers and administrators there provide candid feedback regarding every aspect of the seminars. Several other U.S. churches also have expressed interest in bringing the TTT program to schools in Haiti where they are engaged; this expansion has become a second pilot effort and is currently underway.
The training modules are delivered in six sequenced seminars that adhere to the curriculum published by Haiti’s National Ministry of Education. Each one is designed to enhance and develop what Haitian teachers are already doing well and provide theory and practical application for Haitian teachers to use in their classrooms.
All training modules are original and written by a team of expert and experienced teachers to provide pedagogical theory and practical classroom techniques. Each module is based on current practice, extensive research, and many combined years of classroom experience – as well as professional development resources that have been assembled, used, and evaluated by the TTT team. The modules incorporate important Haitian cultural considerations and the printed materials and personal training are presented in French.
The work of Teachers Training Teachers is funded through donations to the program.
